Better News, a resource for news innovators powered by the American Press Institute, features practical, replicable case studies focused on audience and revenue outcomes.


UNC CISLM

 

The UNC Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media seeks to grow a more sustainable and equitable future for local news, the journalists who make it and the communities that need it, through the intersection of research, education and practice.


Poynter Institute

 

Poynter covers local news transformation through its website and a weekly newsletter, Local Edition. Poynter also trains hundreds of organizations through other transformation programs, including the Editorial Integrity and Leadership Initiative, Digital Transformation Program, Transforming Local Crime Reporting Into Public Safety Journalism and multiple academies and fellowships.


Cronkite News Lab

 

The Cronkite News Lab was focused on innovation and transformation in local TV News. The Lab published case studies showcasing ‘better practices’ from local TV newsrooms across the country as well as experiments by ASU Cronkite School of Journalism student journalists. The case studies focus on broadcast, digital trends, management and technology.


Maynard Institute

 

The Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education is the nation’s oldest organization dedicated to helping the news media accurately portray all segments of society, particularly those often overlooked, such as communities of color. It drives diversity, equity and inclusion in news media and academia through training, engagement and discussion with journalists, news leaders, storytellers, and entrepreneurs.


News Product Alliance

 

News Product Alliance is a community of support and practice for news product thinkers. Its mission is to elevate the discipline of news product management and expand the diversity of news product thinkers in decision-making roles. Its Product Kit is a growing catalog of practical guides for product strategy, product research, and product development in news organizations.


News Catalyst

 

News Catalyst provided news organizations with digital tools, fostered collaboration, and promoted experimentation especially where the industry has traditionally underinvested, such as product development, data, analytics, digital storytelling, mobile, and engagement.


Metrics for News

 

Metrics for News, developed by the American Press Institute,  provides news organizations with powerful journalism analytics that go beyond traditional traffic metrics. It’s a strategic tool built around newsroom priorities to grow audiences, deepen engagement and drive subscriptions. Table Stakes organizations have used the software to inform and empower their new strategies.


Source Matters

 

Source Matters, developed by the American Press Institute, is an award-winning tool that supports automated, customizable, impactful source diversity tracking by any news organization. Table Stakes organizations have used the tool to conduct source audits to learn where their sourcing falls short, help them set goals for improvement and measure their progress over time — all with the goal of better serving their communities.
